About the Opportunity

The selected candidate may be offered a position within the same job family, at a level that is lower than what was posted.  This will be determined based upon the results of the interview process which considers the candidate’s skills, work history, experience level, and other relevant qualifications.

This is a position in the Asset Operations group and is located at the General Office in Akron, Ohio 44308. The primary function of this position will be to support the development of FirstEnergy’s Asset Health Center (AHC). The AHC tool is a software program that accepts input from multiple electronic sources and provides a health score. The AHC tool will be used by various business units to evaluate test results, maintenance history and overall health for transmission equipment including transformers, breakers, and batteries. The AHC tool will play a key role in operational, maintenance, and compliance programs across the organization. The role of the position is to input and maintain the integrity of equipment data, review and analyze maintenance results, and ensure completeness of the data passing across the interfaces to other systems. The position provides the successful candidate with growth opportunities in a number of technologies and activities related to energy delivery and asset health.

In addition to the Asset Health Center, the employee will support the transmission portfolio development and spare equipment tracking. Support for the portfolio includes monitoring and tracking of relay projects, equipment replacement, and obsolescence program development. The Asset Operations Group has responsibility for tracking and recommendation of the spare transmission substation equipment, equipment failure tracking as well as storage and purchase recommendations. The position responsibilities include participate and coordinate the online monitoring program

Responsibilities Include:

  • Utilizing project management skills for projects relating to the Asset Health Center (AHC) software tool.
  • Conducting technical research and analyzing highly complex data; Interpreting results; Providing recommendations to high-level solutions.
  • Recommending and implementing technical solutions to complex issues and assignments.
  • Independently anticipating and meeting internal/external technical needs.
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders to manage, enhance, and maintain the AHC database and data.
  • Deriving business requirements from various internal and external stakeholders to develop solutions, processes, and procedures.
  • Developing process improvements and efficiencies to improve work products.
  • Participate and provide needed coordination to Online Monitoring program to provide online data for AHC equipment
  • Provide transmission portfolio support through spare equipment management and equipment replacement recommendations.
  • Maintaining a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based upon knowledge of potential hazards and industry regulations/requirements.
  • Providing a high level of customer service, continuous support, and proactive involvement to leadership and fellow peers surrounding technical subject matter Analyzing and interpreting test data, maintenance records, and SAP cost data.
  • Working with Cascade and Maintenance Compliance personnel and IT organization as needed.
  • Providing support to FEU personnel on information and /or reports related to Substation Assets.
  • Actively seeking ways to build challenge and add value within scope of assignments.
  • Consistently anticipating and delivering results.
  • Providing advice, education, and encouragement to others.
  • Providing assistance during emergencies and storm related activities.
  • Maintain spare equipment data to ensure effective use strategies 
  • Provide transmission portfolio support through spare equipment management and equipment replacement recommendations.

An employee hired at the Engineer IV level will be expected to perform all of the above responsibilities with more proficiency, and in a more independent manner.  Further, the Engineer IV level employee will be assigned additional responsibilities related to those above.                                                           

Qualifications at the Engineer III level Include:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives are: (1) a Professional Engineer’s (PE) License (2) a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program, or a P.E. License.
  • A Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 (three) years of Engineering experience is required.
  • Understanding of substations, substation equipment and devices preferred.
  • Experience with maintenance, testing and configuration of substation devices preferred.
  • Knowledge of substation equipment maintenance practices is preferred.
  • Project Management experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand substation design prints and bills of material preferred.
  • Ability to analyze large datasets, familiarity with databases and database structure preferred.
  • Strong analytical and technical abilities.
  • Familiarity with the following – Cascade / QlikView / SAP / TOA / DobleWeb is preferred.
  • Familiarity working with databases is preferred.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • In-depth understanding of applicable technical products and/or services and of customer needs and expectations.
  • Demonstrate a questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships. 
  • Desire to continue to learn and grow, work across FirstEnergy, deliver results, and manage others.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with employees at all levels of FirstEnergy Corp.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Some travel required; must possess a personal vehicle and valid driving license.
