Description
Moderated comic scholar Dr. Valentino Zullo, this post screening conversation will explore the ways comics are a medium for LGBTQ+ visibility and an important format for celebration of queer lived experiences. Filmmaker Vivian Kleiman will share about the making of “No Straight Lines: The Rise of Queer Comics” and artists featured in the film. From off the page and screen, panelists will discuss the importance of programs like CPL’s “Get Graphic!” and the Midwest’s only queer comic con, Flaming River Con, in supporting LGBTQ+ youth and promoting inclusion. Flaming River Con organizers, Brittney Orcutt and Logan Dorado (VP and Co-Founder), will share insights gained and plans for the year ahead in the comic con realm. This film and discussion are of great importance with the recent banning of books with LGBTQ characters and stories lines and the passage of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill that intends to limit how schools teach about current events and history.
