About Us

Summit County, Ohio is home to more than 540,000 residents across 31 cities, villages, and townships. Located in the heart of Northeast Ohio, Summit County offers a strong business climate, vibrant communities, nationally recognized parks, and an exceptional quality of life.

As Ohio's first Charter county government, Summit County has operated under this form of government since 1981, providing a modern, responsive approach to public service. The Charter separates executive and legislative responsibilities, promoting accountability, transparency, collaboration, and efficient government.

Summit County provides essential public services through departments focused on public safety, public health, job and family services, engineering and infrastructure, fiscal management, economic development, environmental sustainability, and human services. Working with municipalities, businesses, nonprofits, educational institutions, and community partners, the county strengthens neighborhoods and creates opportunities for residents and employers alike.

The Office of Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro provides executive leadership for county government, overseeing ten departments and managing an annual budget exceeding $500 million. Under Executive Shapiro's leadership, Summit County has prioritized fiscal responsibility, innovation, regional collaboration, workforce development, infrastructure improvements, and strategic investments that strengthen communities and position the county for long-term success.
